Well water chemistry in Wake, Conroe, Johnston, and Chatham counties varies by geology, but several issues come up consistently. Iron is the most common — the region's clay-heavy soils leach iron into groundwater, and levels of 1–10 ppm are typical for wells in rural Wake County and surrounding areas. Hardness (calcium and magnesium) is also prevalent, often running 10–25 GPG — harder than Houston's city water. Hydrogen sulfide (the rotten egg smell) appears in many wells, particularly in areas with organic-rich aquifers. Sediment, turbidity, and occasionally manganese are also common. Bacterial contamination (coliform) is a concern for wells near agricultural land or with aging well casings. We test for all of these during the free site visit.
Yes — always. Well water treatment cannot be recommended accurately without knowing what's actually in your water. Installing a softener without first testing for iron, for example, can foul the softener resin within months. Installing a UV sterilizer with turbid water dramatically reduces its effectiveness. Our comprehensive well water test covers iron, manganese, hardness, pH, sulfur, turbidity, and coliform bacteria. The test is done on-site with same-day results. Based on those results, we design the right sequence of treatment components — which almost always includes pre-filtration before any softer or finer treatment stages. There's no charge for the water test or site assessment.
It depends entirely on what's in it. Unlike city water, well water has no municipal treatment or ongoing monitoring — the quality is the homeowner's responsibility under TX law. Many Houston Metro-area wells have water that's safe to drink as-is, just with unpleasant aesthetics like iron staining or sulfur smell. Others have elevated bacteria, nitrates from agricultural runoff, or naturally occurring contaminants like arsenic that pose genuine health risks. The TX Department of Health and Human Services recommends testing private wells annually for bacteria and every 3–5 years for a broader panel of contaminants. If you've never had your well tested, that's the right starting point — and we include it as part of our free assessment.
The first step is always the free on-site water test — installing the wrong system wastes money, and we can't accurately quote without knowing what's in your water. Once we test, we give you a fixed-price quote with no hidden fees and no upselling on components you don't need. Every quote includes equipment, professional installation, and a lifetime warranty. There's no charge for the site visit, water test, or follow-up calls. Call (281) 626-7059 or schedule online to start.
Not directly — well water requires a softener configured for well water conditions, which typically means iron-resistant resin and often a different resin type than city water systems use. Standard city water softener resin is not designed to handle elevated iron levels and will foul and lose capacity much faster. Additionally, well water often lacks chlorine, which means the resin doesn't receive the incidental regeneration benefit that chlorinated city water provides. If your well water has any iron, we install an iron filter upstream of the softener to protect the resin and maintain long-term softening performance. We select and configure every component based on your specific water test results.
